Carrots, beets and greens!
Join us on Saturday for Perkasie Pride at the Farmers Market
This Saturday celebrates Pride in Perkasie
Join our usual Farmers Market crew as well as additional exhibitors, crafters, vendors and fun on Saturday for Perkasie’s Second Annual Family Pride Festival. Last year’s event was such a treat and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone out again this time!
While we can all enjoy a day out together in celebration, it is important to acknowledge that it is a fraught time for many, given the continued attacks on basic human rights taking place in our communities, state legislatures and national courts. Many people do not feel comfortable, confident or safe expressing themselves to the world, their community or sometimes even themselves. If you are in search of resources to share, NAMI has a concise but robust list of local and national services including crisis care, healthcare and mental health providers. Included in this list is the Trevor Project, a vitally important crisis resource for LGBTQ+ youth that we are honored to support with a donation this month.
We appreciate the joy and fellowship that will be on display this weekend and look forward to sharing our Saturday at Market with this important event. Small town Pride, no matter how great or small, is essential to the continued resilience of our community and we are delighted to be a part!
And now, it’s time to talk about veggies!
We’re bringing red beets with us again this week alongside orange carrots for your ideal shredded summer salad - it may sound a little strange but this salad also makes a great filling for a filling vegan wrap with a bit of almond butter. Tender hakurei turnips return this week for what may be their final spring turn; enjoy these sliced fresh for salad or send them to the stovetop for a great breakfast skillet.
Our first fresh onions round out our root offerings this week, perfect for topping burgers or making your own onion rings if you’re feeling ambitious. While we’re frying, it may be the ideal time to try fennel for a crisp pan-fried treat.
Into the greens
This cooler weather has kept our lettuce happy so we will be sharing lettuce blend for your salads as well as crisp head lettuce, ready for salads and sandwiches alike. The roster of microgreens this week includes snappy radish, bright cilantro, tender floral blend and crisp kale mix. Add these tiny leaves to your sandwiches, salads and smoothies for a touch of color and flavor boost.
In the way of dark leafy greens we’ve got rainbow Swiss chard and tuscan kale, too. If you’re in search of a sensible lunch or side for dinner, look no further than this take on pilaf with chard and tart dried cherries. Crisp Napa cabbage is out this week, just in time for mixing up a great crunchy slaw fit for a meal
Herbs, flowers and beans!
It’s our second week for fresh basil in our herb lineup, alongside scallions and parsley; give these bright greens a spin in your next batch of garlic bread for an easy way to begin adding more herbs to your menu, or get into a fun weekend project by making your own fresh herb pasta at home.
Our fresh cut bouquets are full of sunflowers this week as our summer plantings begin to take off. We have only a few more weeks of planting left, then it’s harvest, harvest, harvest until frost!
We expect that this may be our final week for our favorite spring treat, sugar snap peas, but our summer plantings of green beans are just getting started. Enjoy these tender pods in a quick saute or have a look through this recipe collection to pick a new favorite weeknight recipe.
Thank you so much for joining us this season - can’t wait to see you all at Market!
