Farewell, July!
August is almost here, bringing the first of summer favorites
Our website will be stocked this evening at 6pm for pickup at Perkasie Farmers Market this Saturday. Not all items included in this preview will be available for pre-order and we may have a few extra items at market. As always, you’ll find all the good veggies and location info at wrockhill.com/shop.
Beautiful berries
This week will be our final call for locally grown blueberries from our friends at Vulture’s Roost in Ottsville. Cindy and John tend this 4 acre orchard with organic practices and are fabulous farm friends to have. We will also have plenty of our own blackberries with us this weekend as their season rolls on.
Essential Summer veggies
All the summer favorites are finally starting to show up - we’ll have our first rainbow cherry tomatoes and eggplant with us this weekend, alongside our stalwart patty pan summer squash. While we often recommend these flying-saucer-shaped squash for grilling, they also fit right into fritters with a quick shred. Green beans return again along with pickling cucumbers - a great choice for your favorite Greek salad. Rounding out the lineup are mixed pins of red and green okra for all your frying needs.
Digging in
This week we’re digging more crisp carrots, perfect for a spicy salad. As far as alliums, we’ve got scallions alongside sweet onions and fabulous fresh garlic. Is it worth heatingup the kitchen to roast garlic and use it to top focaccia? Yes. Yes it is.
Leafing out
The summer lettuce drought continues, with some tasty consolation prizes in the shape of our bigger leafy greens. We recommend tender-crisp red Russian kale to the salad set and lacinato “dino” kale for those in search of a great sautee. Rainbow Swiss chard is a popular choice not only for stuffing with ricotta for a make ahead meal, but also for stirring into ricotta for a great stuffed shell dinner.
Fresh cut herbs and flowers
For your table we’ll be bringing fresh cut bouquets stuffed with zinnia and cosmos. For your plate plenty of fresh cut herbs and a selection of our favorite microgreens.
